STAFF MEETING VIDEO: THE MOVIE by Dave Green

It’s a staff meeting video about staff meeting videos! In case you didn’t get the memo, there’s some decidedly not-safe-for-work language being brainstormed, workshopped, leveraged, and sometimes even monetized. And yeah, we’re gonna need that report on our desks ASAP.

Ok, I tell you, now that I kinda get the idea of blogging (its just like twitter but i get more than 120 characters to express myself) It’s like I feel that I finally get to speak my mind, which could be a bad thing (I might not get any work) but hey ho…

So its monday morning bright and early, overcast day here in Kingston Jamaica and I don’t know about you guys in production, but I’ve found as a freelancer, in my 7years or more of being in TV, you have slow periods and you have really crazy hectic periods. August for me has been my slow period! Like all of one job so far, but the crazy thing is…strange but true I’ve been quite busy on the paper work side of things! Yup, of all the months I’ve never done so many quotes in all my life (exaggerating) and only ONE outside broadcast Job.

So with all the quotes I’ve been doing it made me assess the mentality AND reality of the nature of our business, our clients watch too much “foreign” TV and want it to look just like xyz….I “CAN” make it look like xyz but its gonna cost you….NO one seems to get that…and maybe thats my reality. Anyhow can’t waste too much time “blogging’ gotta go do another Budget for a 30sec Spot…chances are….they are gonna tell me, they don’t have the budget for it….ohh well….just wasting time here…..bring on the real budgets!!!

Zoom vs. Moving Camera - What’s the Difference?

It behooves me to admit that I’ve improperly thrown around the word “zoom” on more than one occasion. Okay, more than a handful of occasions. Alright, fine! I do it all the time! The truth is, it can be tricky to articulate the difference between a zoom and a camera movement. Luckily, the Vimeo Staff is here to help us sort it out. Take a look at the video above!

Magnification vs. Movement

Moving camera shots, such as a dolly or tracking shot, physically advance or change the position of the camera. A zoom lens, however, makes the subject larger or smaller within the frame simply by shifting the lens elements inside to change focal lengths. This magnifies the view of the subject while the camera itself remains stationary.

We’re hiring our first-ever fulltime copywriter!

If you work in production, at some point in your career, you’ve heard the quote
“whatever can go wrong will go wrong” and is like you work extra hard to put a contingency in place for certain things. Reality check…there are things in production that will still go wrong and there is nothing you can do about it.

Just to give you a little info, I work in Jamaica, in the Television Industry, yup, love my job, wouldn’t trade it for a 9 to 5 and what inspired me to write this blog was really the VMAs on MTV tonight. In Jamaica, we have mishaps from time to time, in our production, and it hurt me all the time, how clients keep comparing us to first world countries and their “big budgets” they want it to look and sound a particular way, always making references to some overseas project.

Well tonight, I was not at all flabbergasted with the production of the VMAs, the set was great, lighting was on point, more or less a nice line up, but they had a lot of technical issues, a camera bugged out, mic queues were late, and I’m not wishing bad on any production here, but it goes to show we are all human and its the nature of our industry, shit happens all the time,no matter your budget or your location and ain’t nothing you can do about it….nature of the beast, so clients check yourselves please.
